F3Studio for Rosetti Superyachts' first Explorer: "Emocean"

Operating manual for the yachting industry.

The challenge

Rosetti Superyachts’  first explorer, EMOCEAN, made its debut at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival, where it won the “Revelation of the year” award.
Her numbers: a length of 38m, a gross tonnage of 432 tons, a beam of 9m, and a range of  5,000 nautical miles.

Despite the fact that Emocean was the Group’s first superyacht, Rosetti Marino has been on the international market for many years and has built and delivered over 100 commercial ships.

Rosetti Marino Group has always focused on building high-quality, safe, and standard-compliant products; therefore its yachts, like all yachts of this type built by any shipyard, are subjected to special checks carried out by appointed bodies. In this case, RINA has supervised the hull and the stiffening structures and has approved the relevant designs.

Rosetti Superyachts relied on the expertise and experience of F3Studio: during his 20 years of experience, F3Studio collaborated with over 19 different shipyards specializing in superyachts, and provided more than 960 manuals.
The Operating Manual was written by F3Studio and divided into 5 chapters for easy and quick reading.

After listing all of the equipment on board, F3Studio contacted the suppliers and collected all of the equipment’s manuals (ranging from the stunning wine cellar to the water maker and multimedia system).
F3Studio also assisted RSY team in developing emergency procedures when necessary.

From a design point of view, the exterior and sleek lines of this explorer were conceived by Italian design house Hydro Tec, while the interior was penned by BurdissoCapponi Yachts & Design.
In the following photo we can see the interior and the custom 150-bottle wine cellar that acts as a divider between the guest areas and the owner’s stateroom.

Our shipyard has a long tradition in the tug and offshore vessels business, but this was the first yacht for us,
therefore we were lacking experience in the preparation of the Owner’s manual, which is not required on merchant ships.

We decided to appoint F3Studio for this job because of their experience and we are very happy about the choice.

They only needed a couple of visits on board and a detailed list of documents, that was quite easy fur us to put together, and,
in spite of the boat complexity, they managed to produce a very accurate manual.

I am pretty sure we will use their service again for the next boats.

Overview of the Operating Manual

The explorer’s main characteristics are described in the first two chapters of the operating manual, which provide general information about the motor yacht.
Many sections of the manual include a series of illustrations and photographs for:

1- Easily locate the main components such as the technical areas, the fuel storage tanks, the antennas, the navigation lights and the safety equipment.

2- Operate the explorer.  The manual includes the layout of the wheelhouse, the mooring plan and mooring lines, as well as the instruction for operating the port and starboard wing station, a feature that allows this superyacht to be maneuvered easily in the marina.

3- Keep the vessel in good condition. The manual features the arrangement plans and the maintenance procedures of the technical areas, the engine room and the electrical system, the lubrication system and the cathodic protection system.

In the third chapter of the operating manual, F3Studio took care of indicating the safety rules and specifying the proper use of the safety equipment such as the fire extinguisher system, the VHF, the first aid box, the lifebuoys, the fire detection system and the safest escape path

Ocean-faring and environmentally friendly

The operating manual emphasizes two key features of this explorer yacht.

According to Camper and Nicholsons, a global leader in luxury yachting founded in 1782
5,000 nm range and  60l/hr fuel consumption are just some of the remarkable credentials that make her a true ocean-faring, eco-friendly superyacht, capable of extended voyages in total comfort and luxury.”

A go-anywhere explorer must be able to navigate in almost any condition, which is why the operating manual includes a section on how to navigate in specific conditions such as at night, in bad weather, and in rough seas.
F3Studio focused on writing procedures for emergency situations, such as how to operate the rudders after an electrical fault throughout an emergency steering system or how to sail with a single engine if one of the two propulsion systems fails.

The manual contains guidelines for preventing pollution and collecting hazardous waste.
Because this yacht is over 400 GRT, F3Studio consulted the SOPEP plan as well. (Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan)

Emocean’s owner made some decisions that demonstrate his commitment to ecological and environmentally friendly yachting; they chose natural fabrics such as econyl, a nylon made from regenerated landfill.
The sofas covers are made of a soft recycled textile that was used also inside the SpaceX Dragon crew capsule.

Maintenance of the Functionals and Aesthetic features

The manual’s final two chapters are dedicated to maintenance operations and procedures.
The Superyachts are fitted with a vast number of sophisticated equipment and systems that require periodical inspections and maintenance to avoid deterioration.

Functionality and aesthetic: in addition to the procedure for maintaining the hull, blocking the keel, and lifting the yacht, F3Studio also outlined how to maintain the yacht’s aesthetic features, like the big windows and glass panels present both in the interior and the exterior of this explorer.

Glass is becoming more prevalent in superyacht design, thanks to advancements in the structure and treatment of glass, which is now tougher, stronger and more malleable.
The exterior of Emocean features large windows, for this reason the main deck’s external areas are equipped with a rail and a double trolley for cleaning them.

F3Studio included a section on how to use the safety rails properly when cleaning the exterior windows.

As we said, the glass is present also inside the yacht, where a large glass panel floor can be found; if you’re curious about how it feels, journalist Nick Burnham steps over it in the video below.

The manual outlines instructions for caring for all the exposed parts, such as metal parts, teak, interior surfaces, and exterior upholster.
Maintenance guidelines and procedures were provided for each material, ranging from high-durability materials like corian to surfaces that require extra care like marble, all the way through granite, stone and parquet.
