Mini ISM for Superyachts Under 500 GT

What It Is and What F3Studio Offers

Certificato RINA MINI ISM superyacht - F3Studio

F3Studio is expanding its service offering for the superyacht industry with the introduction of Mini ISM drafting for yachts under 500 GT. With over twenty years of experience in superyacht technical documentation, F3Studio supports Yacht Managers, Owners, Captains and Shipyards in the drafting of bespoke Safety Management Systems (SMS) tailored to each vessel.

From the ISM Code to the Mini ISM

The ISM Code (International Safety Management Code) is the international standard governing safety management and pollution prevention at sea. Established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and incorporated into Chapter IX of the SOLAS Convention, the code requires the adoption of a Safety Management System (SMS): a structured framework of procedures, responsibilities and controls designed to ensure the safety of passengers, crew and the marine environment.

On large commercial vessels such as container ships, ferries and cruise liners, ISM compliance is a highly complex undertaking. It requires internal and external audits and is typically managed by dedicated teams of specialists. The system mandates roles such as the Designated Person Ashore (DPA), internal inspectors, training officers and qualified auditors.

The superyacht sector operates under a different framework. For commercial vessels under 500 GT but over 24 metres, the full ISM Code does not apply. Instead, a streamlined version adapted to the specificities of the sector is required: the Mini ISM. This is a Safety Management System designed to achieve the same safety objectives as the full code, but with a structure proportionate to the size and operational complexity of a superyacht.

Mini ISM for yachts: who needs it and why it matters

The Mini ISM is currently required by the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code, the regulatory framework of the British shipping registers that includes the Cayman Islands, Isle of Man, Bermuda, Gibraltar and the British Virgin Islands. An estimated 80% of the world’s large yacht fleet operates in compliance with Red Ensign Group regulations and SOLAS requirements, making this the reference standard for the entire industry.

Today, the Mini ISM is required for charter yachts under 500 GT. For privately registered superyachts, compliance remains voluntary, but a growing number of Owners and Captains are choosing to adopt it. The reasons are practical: a well-drafted SMS improves safety on board, facilitates crew training and a potential transition to commercial registration, protects the vessel’s resale value, and makes the yacht more attractive to insurers, who tend to offer more favourable terms to compliant vessels.

Riccardo Fregara, CEO of F3Studio, explains: “Following the adoption of the Mini ISM by the Red Ensign Group and the major Flag State Administrations, it is reasonable to expect that all flag states will introduce similar requirements in the near future. The Mini ISM is set to become a de facto industry standard.”

Yachts between 30 and 50 metres represent the segment where the Mini ISM finds its most natural application. These vessels are sufficiently complex to require a structured safety management system, yet not so large as to demand the organisational apparatus typical of full ISM Code compliance on commercial ships.
Unlike large commercial vessels, where management companies rely on numerous professional figures dedicated to ISM management, in the sub-500 GT segment the drafting process can be handled by a single qualified partner, working in close collaboration with the Owner and the crew on board.

F3Studio: from technical documentation to safety management documentation

With the Mini ISM, F3Studio has chosen to broaden its service offering for the superyacht sector. This is a natural evolution for a company that has been working on board superyachts for over two decades, producing operating manuals, planned maintenance programmes, SOLAS Training Manuals, SOPEP, SEEMP, Garbage Management Plans, Cyber Security Plans, as-built drawings, IHM (Inventory of Hazardous Materials) and video procedures.

Who better than the company that documents the vessel can structure its safety procedures? F3Studio knows every system, every installation and every operational procedure of the yachts it works on. This in-depth knowledge, acquired through hands-on experience, is the ideal foundation for drafting a Safety Management System genuinely tailored to the characteristics of each individual vessel, rather than a generic document superficially adapted.
To further consolidate its expertise in this field, Riccardo Fregara, CEO of F3Studio, obtained in March 2026 the ISM management certification issued by RINA Services, after completing a dedicated course covering the ISM Code requirements, the certification and verification process (SMC, DOC), and the structure of a Safety Management System. Two additional F3Studio professionals have obtained the same certification.

Three certified professionals within a single organisation reflect F3Studio’s commitment to delivering a service grounded in consolidated expertise and competence.

For shipyards, this represents a concrete opportunity to offer new post-delivery services. At the point of handover of a superyacht, the shipyard can present the Owner with a comprehensive package that includes, alongside the technical documentation, the drafting of the Mini ISM. An additional service that adds value to the delivery and spares the Owner the need to source it elsewhere.

For the Owner, entrusting F3Studio with the Mini ISM means working with a partner that already knows the vessel in depth. This translates into faster turnaround, greater coherence between the documentation and the safety management system, and a single point of contact for all documentary compliance needs.

F3Studio drafts every Safety Management System around the specific characteristics of the vessel, taking into account the installed systems and the yacht’s operational profile.

This approach reflects the philosophy that F3Studio has always applied to its technical documentation: an effective manual is not simply a document that satisfies regulatory requirements, but a tool designed for those who use it on a daily basis. The same principle applies to the Mini ISM.

F3Studio: superyacht industry experts

F3Studio has over 20 years of experience in the maritime sector, with active collaborations with Italy’s leading superyacht shipyards, including Azimut|Benetti (since 2016), Sanlorenzo (since 2017), Baglietto (since 2016) and Tankoa (since 2018). With a portfolio of over 960 manuals in the maritime sector and collaborations with 24 shipyards, the Genoa-based company has built deep expertise in the segment and its regulatory and operational specificities.

The introduction of the Mini ISM drafting service confirms F3Studio’s ambition to position itself not merely as a technical documentation provider, but as a comprehensive partner for superyacht documentation and compliance.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

The Mini ISM is a Safety Management System (SMS) designed for commercial superyachts over 24 metres and under 500 GT. It is an adapted version of the full ISM Code, the IMO international standard for safety management on board ships: the same safety objectives, with a structure proportionate to the size and operational complexity of a yacht.

It depends on the flag state and the use of the vessel. For charter yachts under 500 GT registered under the main Red Ensign Group flag states (Cayman Islands, Isle of Man, Bermuda, Gibraltar, British Virgin Islands) the Mini ISM is already mandatory. For private superyachts compliance remains voluntary, but a growing number of owners are choosing to adopt it for insurance, resale and operational safety reasons. It is reasonable to expect that in the coming years it will become mandatory under additional flag states as well.

The Mini ISM applies to commercial superyachts over 24 metres in length and under 500 GT. This covers the majority of yachts in the 30 to 50 metre range. Yachts over 500 GT fall under the full ISM Code, which involves a significantly more complex regulatory and organisational framework.

The full ISM Code applies to large commercial vessels: container ships, ferries, cruise liners. It requires mandatory roles such as the Designated Person Ashore (DPA), recurring internal and external audits, and is typically managed by dedicated management companies with specialist teams. The Mini ISM pursues the same safety objectives but with a structure proportionate to the superyacht world: it can be drafted by a single qualified partner working in collaboration with the owner and crew, without the need for a complex organisational apparatus.

A well-drafted Mini ISM includes the safety and pollution prevention policy, the responsibilities and authority of owner, master and crew, operational procedures for emergency situations, maintenance plans and operational instructions for on-board systems, incident and non-conformity reporting procedures, and crew drill and training programmes. The content must be specific to the individual vessel: a generic document is not sufficient.

It depends on the complexity of the vessel and the availability of basic technical information. For F3Studio, which in most cases has already drafted the vessel’s technical documentation, turnaround times are significantly shorter than starting from scratch: information on the systems, installations and operational procedures is already part of the company’s knowledge base.
